Performance of dust spot / power lines removal tool
AnsweredAre you guys happy with the NEO performance in terms of sensor dust spots removal and/or power lines removal? Those were features that made me preorder Luminar NEO. Otherwise I would stick with older Luminar 4.
In my opinion the performance is mediocre at best and the software does not what Skylum promised to do or what an average user would wish the software can do.
Dust spots: It removes the most prominent ones but leaves most of spots which are not easily seen with naked eye in an unprocessed image. But once I add more contrast, they usually pops up and I have to go back with my edit and finish manually what Luminar NEO has left unfinished.
Power lines: In areas like clear sky where manual removal of the power lines is a piece of a cake NEO does pretty decent job. But in areas where there’s something more complex in the background behind the power lines it leaves either some weird artefacts or does not removes parts of the lines at all. It actually does need super complex – clouds in the sky are in some cases enough. Removing those artefacts in most cases requires more effort than the power lines themselves.

Well I did not buy Leo for power line removal, figuring it is easy enough in Photoshop, but I gave it a try -- not impressed. It does a good job removing lines where there is a bright sky background, however 1) it tried to removed other objects that also jutted into the sky and there seems to be no mask or edit feature on this tool so I can not refine 2) it does not attempt to remove powerlines that are overtop of a more complex background.
Given that, I mine as well just use Photoshop to do this.
