Portrait Bokeh AI FAQ
PinnedWhat is the Portrait Bokeh AI tool?
When capturing photos, it is often desirable to place the area behind a subject out of focus. The Japanese word bokeh is used to describe the aesthetic nature of the blur that is produced in these out-of-focus areas. Traditionally, to achieve this effect, it often takes a high-quality lens and involves shooting at a wide-open aperture like ƒ2.0.
To simulate this effect and allow it to be used on most portrait photos, Luminar AI offers the Portrait Bokeh AI Tool. It works on just about any portrait image – regardless of the lens used or the lighting conditions.
How does Portrait Bokeh AI work?
Luminar AI uses artificial intelligence to recognize people in the frame, including those in groups or unusual positions, to create an initial mask that separates people from the background. The mask works with 3D depth-mapping technology to calculate distances in a photo. The result allows you to create a beautiful blurred background in seconds, adding realistic and dreamy 3D bokeh effects to your portraits.
Will it work for non-human portrait subjects, like a dog, or with non-portrait images?
The Portrait Bokeh AI tool is specifically designed and trained to recognize humans in photos. In the future, we may consider creating more Bokeh AI tools for other subjects.
Why is the Portrait Bokeh AI tool inactive?
If the Portrait Bokeh AI tool is disabled, it is because the AI cannot recognize any human(s) in the photo. Please make sure you have clearly visible people in the photo.
Can Portrait Bokeh AI use the depth data from the LiDAR from the iPhone or iPad?
No, it isn't necessary to use this. The tool performs a complete analysis of the scene and calculates its own 3D-depth map. It works with all lens types and cameras (in fact even scanned prints).
Can you change bokeh shape?
At this time Portrait Bokeh AI is designed to be easy to use and produce photorealistic results. Like all Luminar AI tools however, we explore and add improvements over time.

Why for portraits only? I shot mainly macro pictures and I would like to try the bokeh filter with them in order to highlight the main subject. I understand that this filter is designed for portraits, but I could select by hand the main subject area and apply the bokeh filter. Well, I could - if the filter would be enabled, but it is not. PLEASE, leave the filter enabled also if a human subject is not detected in the picture, allowing subject selection by hand. Thank you in advance!
