Can't sync cropping and image layers anymore?
AnsweredA few months ago, sync/copy adjustments in Luminar had more capability than it does now. Luminar used to be able to copy crop/rotation adjustments from one image to the next. Luminar also used to be able to add an image layer to one image and then be able to add that image layer to a whole sequence of images using sync adjustments. Both of these features were very powerful, but now seem to be no longer present unless I am missing something.
I just processed a sequence of photos to make a time lapse of a glacier calving off. This was much more tedious than it was a few months ago in Luminar because it was very hard to crop them and line them up all the same. You used to be able to sync the adjustments including the crop and then just move the crop rectangle in each exposure a bit if the camera moved.
Also several months ago, I found a neat use of the sync feature in Luminar that was very powerful and a unique capability in Luminar, but it seems to be no longer possible. I had a whole sequence of Lunar Eclipse photos that were aligned and I had an enhanced moon photo that was a stack of all the images to improve detail. Then I used Luminar to process just one photo and then blended the enhanced photo in an additional image layer in Luminar. Then I used the sync adjustments feature to put these adjustments into all the images. The key point was that I was able to sync an additional image layer with appropriate blending into hundreds of images very easily. This worked VERY well. I tried a few weeks ago to do the same thing, but sync adjustments no longer syncs added image layers. I was going to have to individually add the image and select the same blend settings in all the photos. This will be much more tedious. Is this capability gone? I made sure to post back in February about how I did it on this forum so that hopefully the feature would be advertised and not eliminated because it was really powerful.
Both features that used to be present, syncing crop/rotation settings, and syncing added image layers, are very useful and should not be eliminated. They are really powerful for things like time lapse, focus stacking, HDR, auto exposure bracketing, adding watermarks, and just doing the same things to a whole sequence of images that are very similar.
I do understand that many times you don't want things like a crop rectangle or an added image layer to be synced when you sync adjustments. (You almost would never want clone adjustments to be synced). But there are many instances where it can be useful. In Aperture and Lightroom there is a way to select which adjustments were copied from one image to the next, crop is one of them. Is there a plan to either make new commands like "sync geometry" or "sync layers." Or is there a plan to have a way to select which adjustments get synced when you tell it to sync adjustments and could that plan include layers and cropping?
I did see this on the roadmap:
-
Improved Selective Sync (Adjustment Sync)
Synchronize your image adjustments across your photos. Image layers, Crop, Erase, Clone & Stamp do not affect syncing.
Does this mean that they are planning to add the ability to select what you sync as I just mentioned? Or does this item represent the removal of the crop and image layers from the sync adjustments feature, which is what I am posting about right now?
Please consider making this possible again.
Thanks,
Rob

For another example, I have a whole bunch of pictures of a bear where I would want to crop them all about the same to look through them and see which ones I like. It would be far more tedious to crop them all individually. I would prefer to sync the crop to all the images. I may have to adjust some of them a little later, but it is a good starting point

Hi People,
I used the trial version and finally bought the Luminar 4.
The software is ok, and just "Ok" for a very specific reason.
It does cool things very well, like the AI Sky replacement and some adjustment tools. Still, when looking for a serious contender for Lightroom or PhotoRaw, it terribly lacks one functionality: sync "Crop" among pictures.
I usually take my shots using the highest resolution and all the frame, and I always crop my pictures to 16x9 ratio. When using competitors' products, I always start cropping one of my photographs and sync the crop to all the others. This is a very basic, "Must Have", feature that any software with this purpose should have. Guess what: Luminar 4 doesn't have it. Yes, I have to go on each of my 100s pictures and crop each one. Each one...
Another annoyance is the slowness. The sync process is unbearably slow.
I hoped I had explored the trial better. Although the Sky replacement is cool, I wouldn't pay for only this. -
Yep, I can totally understand when software does not have features originally when you pay for it and you hope that in the future, the software gets those features. That is particularly understandable if the software costs less than the competitors
But I do not understand when the software has a great feature, and then they remove that feature, especially if that feature is critically important.

That's quite interesting. I didn't know that the software HAD this feature.
I saw that Margaret Bright forwarded the message to the Skylum team 3 months ago. Hey, Skylum people: any plans to make the feature available again?
I hope Skylum can revert it and the update will be a free download.
