Well, I looked around for an alternative to Lightroom and I've found it! Great software at a great price - and although I'm aware of areas for improvement, I think the concept and basic operation is great - and the future looks fab as the product is refined.
One tip I have found for new users with large existing libraries where OS is on a separate physical disk to the photos directory - when you install, don't select the folder where your pics are (it takes ages), create a "dummy", empty folder instead and select this when the installer asks for location of photos.
Once installed, create a new catalog on the disk (File->Catalog->New) where your OS is installed, and then add your pictures folder (from the second physical disk) to Luminar (Library->Add folder) - building your new catalog then whizzes along as it reduces single disk contention (Luminar seems to default on first installation to creating catalog in same directory as photos, massive amount of disk activity to build catalog initially).
Anyway, worked for me and I have a really, really budget PC...
