New guy here. What is the role of the catalog in L3 and how does it relate to existing folders containing photos?

My name is Bruce Litzkow. Brand new user. Long time user of Lightroom Classic interfacing with SmugMug for sharing photos. L3 says one does not need to import photos into L3 but the first thing it asks one to do is copy photos from existing folders "into L3 catalog". I need to know the role the catalog plays in the L3 environment.

    Hi Bruce,

Luminar 3 doesn't create any copies of the images and doesn't cache images. It creates the previews of the photos.

When you open the images in the Library part, you can see the previews only. When you double click on the image and switch to the Edit mode Luminar 3 processes and downloads the photos/original files.

You can use File > Import if you want to relocate your pictures or create the copies of them.

In case you don't want to change the location of the photos or create the copies of them, please use Library > Add folder.

In this way, you will be able to add the photos without relocating them.
